Bare Root Plants for Sale

Thank you for your interest and happy growing!

PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.

We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!

Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.

If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!

TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…

Horseradish

$7.00

Armoracia rusticana
Horseradish is an incredibly hardy perennial member of the Brassica family (kale, mustard, collards, etc.). Hardy down to zone 3, with massive, deep tap roots, thick, rugged, glossy green foliage and intense flavor, this is a plant you can rely on. In fact, it is like Comfrey in that once you plant it somewhere, you can expect it to always be there. Digging it out will create more plants, not remove them! Think through where you’ll want it! Planted in an annual garden, you will find it quite hard to remove which is great if thats what you want…

Not often thought of as a chop and drop plant, Horseradish can be used just like comfrey with leaves cut periodically and used as a nutrient dense mulch for new plants. We also use it as a rhizome barrier on the edge of permanent planting areas to keep weeds and lawn from creeping into a garden space. The potent smell of roots, when cut into, help deter burrowing creatures as well.

Late fall to early spring, you can dig up your plant once it has had a year to establish and harvest pungent, beautifully flavored roots to use in your favorite dishes. Freshly grated Horseradish is an incredible experience! Plant a few fragments in a new place to expand your plants, or know that it will be coming back anyway! No need to dig it all up and store it, it stores best in the ground and can be dug up as needed.

You can purchase established plant crowns that have active growth on top or bundles of root fragments that can be planted out a bit below the soil surface with some mulch on top to have a large patch within a year or so. Root fragments are at least 1/2” thick and 2-3” long.

Size:
Roughly 3’ and a little taller when in full flower or in very happy conditions.

Site Preference:
Very hardy plant, can deal with dry or rough soil as it punches down deep with it’s tap root.  Enjoys full sun and rich soil but can handle a wider range.

Hardiness:
Zone 3
