Spring Flash Sale!

Bare Root Plants for Sale

Thank you for your interest and happy growing!

PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.

We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!

Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.

If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!

TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…

Spring Flash Sale!

from $20.00

(Please read fully…)
We’ve finished shipping orders this spring and find ourselves with an over abundance of a few types of plants. We’d love to find homes for these beautiful friends! Specifically we have Hazelnut, Chestnut, Paw Paw and a few other seed grown young trees. We’ve processed them into grades as indicated below. We will only send you plants that we’d be happy to plant in our own fields or set into nursery beds to grow a bit more robust. In general, ‘Grade A’ are options you can certainly plant in their final home, the ‘Grade B’ types are best to plant in a home nursery bed for this growing season to size up and be field ready for fall planting or next spring… ‘Grade C’ are completely viable but definitely need a year or so with TLC to size up. A fantastic way to get 1st year trees for incredibly low prices.

This is a chance to get some great numbers of long lived plants sourced from northern contexts and wonderful parents and grown with beyond organic practices. With good care and a little patience these packs can translate into some lovely long term resilience!

Paw Paw:
’Grade A Plus’ -
2nd year plants with at least 12” of top growth and robust and full root system. A 10 pack of these will be able to set in motion a nice small orchard!
Grade A’ - Healthy, long roots with tops at 6” or more. These would be just fine being planted out in their final location with a bit of support (compost, mulch, maybe some watering during the season)
Grade B’ - Healthy roots with a top shorter than 6”, perhaps with winter damage or dieback. We’re only selecting plants that look viable and alive, and that we’d happily plant out in our nursery to grow on and rebound to viable plants for fall. ‘Grade B’ is recommended for home nursery: plant out in a rich garden bed in community (2-4” between plants), take care of them, and then dig up and plant out in fall or next spring to final homes. Paw Paw rebounds from healthy roots quite nicely and will be field ready after one year in a nursery bed.

Hazelnuts:
’Grade A Plus’ - 2nd year field grown plants. These are starting to sucker and widen and have built a strong root system for very fast establishment. May begin cropping within 2 to 3 years
Grade A’ - Nice, fibrous roots with a top 8” or taller (most are taller). Ready for field planting with some compost/mulch
Grade B’ - Shorter than 8”, some rabbit damage perhaps or other pressure, but completely alive and viable. Suggested to plant in nursery bed for this season and you may have 2 to 3’ tall beautiful plants by fall if you take care of them!
’Seed’ - We offer 100 count seeds of northern hardy, robust, compact and productive hazelnuts for growing. These seeds have been thoughtfully cold/moist stratified for the winter and are ready to be planted in air prune boxes, nursery beds or pots to grow into nice seedlings.

Chestnuts:
’Grade A’ -
At least 8” or taller with no top damage, ready for field
Grade B’ - 6” or shorter with perhaps some rabbit or other damage, best to plant in nursery bed to size up.

Osage Orange:
’Grade A’
- 12” or taller, ready to plant out
’Grade B’ - sub 12”, many just fine for field planting but could do well in nursery for one year.

If you want more details on any of these plants, you can browse our main purchase page to read about each of these wonderful plants. What we’re offering here is the exact same stock as what we normally offer genetically. Prices set to find good homes ASAP. We will ship orders as they come in.
