Osage Orange

Bare Root Plants for Sale

Thank you for your interest and happy growing!

PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.

We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!

Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.

If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!

TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…

Osage Orange

from $8.00

Maclura Pomifera
Osage Orange, Hedge Apple, Bodark, Monkey Ball, Mock Orange, Horse Apple. So many names for such a unique tree! One of our offerings that does not have edible parts for us, Osage Orange still definitely earns a place in our landscape. These zone 5 hardy trees have some amazing attributes… Fast growing, site adaptable, thorny as heck (hence the name “hedge” or “hedge apple” since they can make incredibly strong living walls), wood that is some of the highest BTU firewood in the Northern Hemisphere AND incredibly rot resistant… This tree has a lot going for it.

Planted in rows along boundaries, Osage has a history of being the original fence line for many old farms in our area. In fact, we collect the huge grapefruit sized (and scented!) fruits in the fall from 100+ year old hedgerows at the edges of farms in our area. Grown close together with overlapping branches, Osage can become an absolutely impenetrable wall of wood and thorns.

We are interested in it as boundary planting, living fencing, high quality firewood for our future, fence posts, beauty, speed of growth, adaptability, and the potential to graft ‘Che’ fruit onto them in our living fence. You can look up ‘Che fruit’ to get excited :)

We have smaller seedlings around 8” tall or shorter and larger seedlings at least 10” or much taller available to get your plantings started.

Size:
Can reach 40’ tall or even a little taller, and has a wide crown. Can be coppiced, pollarded and woven, etc to form various shaped fencing

Site Preference:
Enjoys full sun and can adapt to many soil conditions. We’ve seen it growing in muck soils, farm edges, woodland edges, etc. It can handle a lot of challenges and manage to grow.

Hardiness:
Zone 5-9
